What did you do for extreme nausea and vomiting during pregnancy?
I am about 9 weeks pregnant and miserable! I have constant nausea and can’t even keep water down. I had to go to the ER yesterday to be put on an IV because I was so dehydrated. They gave me pills to help with the nausea, but I can’t take them- even if I manage to swallow them, I vomit. I feel horrible- I can’t eat, drink, or sleep. I am open to any advice. What helped during your pregnancy? Thank you for your help.

Ask your doctor for Zofran in dissolvable tablet form. You don’t swallow the pill, it just dissolves on your tongue. Zofran is the best medication out there for nausea and severe hyperemesis (vomiting).
When I felt nauseated, I would take sips of water which had lots of lemon juice in it to make it tart. Just sips – not guzzling. Ginger tea also helps.

Maria asks…
Can extreme nausea and vomiting during pregnancy that leads to severe dehydration also cause extreme fatigue?
I’ve already been sent to the hospital to get IV fluids because I’m so dehydrated. I’m also exteremely tired and have no energy for anything. I know that some fatigue during pregnancy is normal (I’m mean… your body is going through some major changes) but my fatigue is so overwhelming sometimes! I think I’ve gotten dehydrated again. I’m working on correcting that before I call the doctor again. By the way… I’m about 3 and half months along. I just wanted to know if excess fatigue could be linked to the dehydration issue and if I rehydrate myself will I get more energy?
I am currently drinking PowerAde to try to get rehydrated (I’ve heard the same thing about water not being the best when you’re so dehydrated). I’m also taking prenatal vitamins. They’ve already done one ultrasound and so far the baby looks fine. It’s heartbeat is at about 140 (same as my first child). With my first I didn’t get relief until 4 or 5 months. i would really like to take care of this before it gets that far. The doctor’s said I have hyperemisis which I’ve read goes away around 21 weeks (4 or 5 months oddly enough). Thanks for all the answers.

I feel SO bad for you, because I have been there! I, too, was sent to get IV fluids…it was terrible. And yes, my fatigue was much worse because of the vomiting and dehydration. When most people were feeling better from morning sickness at around 8-12 weeks, mine was getting worse. It went on that way until I was 18 weeks before I really started to get relief. At 10 weeks my doctor prescribed me Zofran, because I could not keep anything down. It was the only thing that worked, and it was either take it or go back to the hospital.
One thing that really helped (along with the medication) was Pedialyte – the same stuff you give to kids when they’re sick. It comes in different flavors and a flavorless variety, but I preferred grape. It’s not sour like Gatorade, but it provides all the same nutrients – potassium, electrolytes, and sucrose. It’s very easy to drink and is easier on your stomach than water (water actually has the wrong pH for an upset stomach).
Congrats and best of luck, and here’s hoping you feel better soon.

Extreme fatigue and nausea twin pregnancy. I just need some moral support!?
I know this is probably normal for my situation. I’m 35 and 11 weeks pregnant with fraternal twins. The nausea, vomiting and fatigue just keep getting worse. I can’t function. Everything in my life is affected by this. If my husband initiates a simple conversation about how to work out our shcedule for the next day I am completely overwhelmed. If my 16 yo son needs a ride or money that I have to go get I’m completely overwhelmed. I call in sick to my job once a week and usually leave early on another day. When I am at work I spend an inordinate amount of time in the bathroom vomiting or simply laying my head down! My boss, in spite of being totally aware of my condition, is turning into a real snot about it. The HR person at my job told her on the phone, after having a talk with me that I would be getting some paperwork in from my doctor that will ensure job protection for me. This just seemed to upset her more and she was downright hostile to me on Friday when I got sick right in front of her. I am so overwhelmed. Every day, everywhere I go something is expected of me. I would totally go on a leave of absence and get away from everyone including my family if I could. On weekends I sleep for like 16-20 hours a day and still feel tired. My husband accused me of trying to sleep my life away! Now I feel resentful toward him because he doesn’t seem to get that I’m really sick.

I know how you’re feeling and i only have 1 bub in my belly. I had to leave my job because of the morning sickness which didn’t go away until 27 weeks and still on and off. Your boss is being a real prick! And the kids….well don’t they always want something! Mine are 8 and 9 and there is always something and if it’s not them, it’s the bloody school wanting money for this and that or your child misses out and then theres hubby who doesn’t understand a thing your feeling and your expected to deal with these changes to your body and still run a functioning home when you feel like your eyes want to pop out of your head because you need to rest. I feel for you because i know what your feeling.

What are the chances my pregnancy is viable?
I have had several transvag ultrasounds in the last 3 weeks to attempt to date this pregnancy. The first one (3 weeks ago) showed a small sac measuring about 5 weeks (the Dr. didn’t actually measure, just said that’s what it looked like). One week later, there was a sac and fetal pole measuring 5 weeks 5 days. Today the sac measured 6 weeks 4 days. The uterus is also growing. But there was no heartbeat and the fetal pole is not as big as it should be for this week. But they said something about a lot of blood flow (sorry, don’t remember exactly what they called it- bright something, but that’s what they said it was) around the sac. There was also a very small dot that would show up then disappear. They drew blood today, and will do it again Monday to compare HCG levels (won’t know anything about that until Monday). What are the chances this is a viable pregnancy with the continued growth and symptoms (frequent urination, nausea/vomiting, extreme breast tenderness, etc)?
I think my Dr. is ultrasound-happy. Seriously though, we were trying to get an accurate date. I had just recently started menstruating again (I have a 17 month old daughter who was breastfeeding until a couple of weeks ago), and was not quite regular. Also, I was on coumadin because I had a pulmonary embolism after the c-section with our daughter, but as soon as I had a positive test (5 weeks ago) I called the Dr. and had him switch me to lovenox. I have had 5 previous pregnancies that went to full-term and beyond (although we did have a son pass away when he was almost 2 months old due to a metabolic disorder).
Nothing was said about “blighted ovum”, they were referring to the bright red that shows on the screen when they check for circulation. They seemed surprised that it was so bright, because they didn’t really see anything in the sac.

They did not pick up my baby’s heart beat until i was 10 weeks pregnant. The baby will have a lot of blood flow there is a heart beating its just hard to pick up. To me it sounds viable. You are not out of the clear yet until about 12 weeks so my doctor told me.

Ken asks…
Extreme nausea and diarrhea during pregnancy?
Hi,
I’m 24 weeks pregnant, and I never get the flu. On Saturday I was sick, I had it coming out both ends (sorry, I know that’s disgusting) for about 30 hours. I kept hydrated with clear liquids. I had no fever, no chills, I would just sweat alot while vomiting.
I felt OK the next day, and now I feel normal. There’s been no change in baby’s movements, he still seems to be going strong. It came and went so quickly I didn’t get a chance to even call the doctor.
Would you say this is gastroentritis, or maybe food poisoning?
I see my doctor next week, should I see him sooner to make sure baby is OK?
Thanks

I think everything is OK. It could have been the flu or the norwalk virus. It has a lot of the same symptoms. If you are feeling fine now and the baby is still moving then things should be fine. I’d keep with your doctor appointment for next week unless you start feeling poopie again and then I’d go sooner.
Take care!
