Question for pumping/breastfeeding mothers?
My little boy is 3 and a half months old. He has such bad problems with pooping. He can’t seem to go on his own. I wasn’t able to breastfeed him he wouldn’t latch on so I pump and feed him with a bottle. He is so gassy and strains and screams. We have tried mylacon (not sure how its spelled), all different kinds of “gas relieving” bottles, tried tummy massage, and yes Karo syrup (won’t do again, I know, i know, its dangerous), sometimes he is just inconsolable. The doctor says that sometimes it just takes them a while to figure the whole pooping thing out. About once a week we have to give him a suppository so that he can go but I want him to be able to do this on his own. He is always much happier after the suppository and he poops about a cup of poop when we do this so I know that’s why he is acting like he is in extreme pain. Has anyone experienced this? all I can find online is women that have formula fed babies that experience this, what about breast fed babies? Mostly I wanna know is how long this happened and how did you work through this?

My son was VERY gassy and constipated for the first 3 months I breast fed him. Finally my dr asked what I was eating. I eat a LOT of dairy which apparently can make breast fed babies VERY gassy and constipated. I immediately stopped eating all dairy and the problems completely stopped within 24 hours. I suggest cutting out all dairy and things like broccoli and eating more fiber. Good luck!

Yes i think you’re right with the poopie hypothesis…you can rub her belly clockwise.. Put something warm on her belly..and also fold her legs towards the belly a little.. I found this helped with my kids….
Good luck!

What do I do if I think my 4 week old baby is lacotse intolerant or may have a milk allergy?
she has excessive gas..we spend over 6 hours a day just burping and trying to relieve gas. It finally dawned on me now that it might be her formula..shes already on enfamil gentlease which hsa only 1/5 of the lactose other milk based formulas have..i have her on biogaia probiotic drops too..i dunno i just feel really helpless..and so sorry for her. how should i switch formulas? do i have to do it gradually?

You could try the Similac lactose free formula. But I will say that it doesn’t sound like a milk allergy (you’d be seeing eczema or projectile vomiting, etc) or even lactose intolerance (which is actually very rare and you’d be seeing diarrhea or projectile vomiting.) Gas is a problem with every baby, including breastfed babies, and when it comes to formula just about all babies have issues with gas. The best thing for it is to feed them sitting up if possible, use a bottle that is less likely to have them swallow air, make sure you interrupt them while eating to burp (every 1-2oz), and using a formula with less lactose may help as well. So long as she’s pooping fine, is gaining weight well, then switching formula is more likely to cause more gastric upset than it’s worth.
Avoid soy, I know someone will mention that if you want to go lactose free to go soy, but the experts have said that soy-intolerance and allergies are FAR more common and more likely to cause problems, plus it’s constipating.
If you do decide to try switching, then you will need to go gradually. I believe they said to expect a good transition to take up to 2 weeks.
Honestly I wouldn’t. She’s only 4 weeks old, the gas will more than likely get better as she gets older, and you’d probably get as much of a result bicycling her legs, massaging her tummy in a clockwise manner, and trying different burping positions.

i have chest pains on my entire chest, and its not gas!?
last night i came home and i had a massive headache and all of my body was aching cause i had been walking around alot. that day i took about 4 pills, cause i have allergies, cold, and the flu cause i was really aching and tired. and so that night i took a nyquil. then i woke up this morning at 6 cause my heart was racing, and everything was dizzy, and i felt like somebody was sitting on my chest! it’s not just the left side, but my entire chest. i told my parents and they just said i was being a baby, and my dr. is closed today unfortunatly. i’m not overweight or anything, i’m pretty healthy. i have asthma though it never acts up for awhile. and there is no plegm so i dont think its asthma. i tried to sleep and it stopped hurting but soon as i move or anything it starts pounding and there’s sharp pains. it hurts so much i cried. i noticed as my heart starts to beat really fast it hurts more. Has this happened to anyone? what should i do to relieve the pain? i took a pepto already..

I am sorry you feel bad… Let me see if I can help calm you down a little bit… The human body is truely an amazing system, especially at your age, and is quite equipped to handle most things you can throw at it……
It could be a number of things (HA,embolism, etc…), but you are a little young for a heart attack unless its a genetic issue which is certainly possible, but impossible to know for sure without listening with a stethoscope…. Also, if it was an embolism, then you would not be on answers.yahoo right now… In short, your body is probably OK in the short-term…
If I was to simply guess assuming no genetic issue, which the odds are not very likely on….. It sounds like a hypertensive event led on by some medication you took, most likely being a high dosage of whatever asthma medication are you taking. It could also be a drug interaction with taking several medications as well, however. So you know, many asthma medications speeds up the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), which would explain any racing heart beat you might have… The head aches symptoms, and chest pain would support this theory as well….
The first thing I would do is stop taking the medication immediately unless it was specifically assigned by a doctor. Also, only take the asthma medication as prescribed and not a higher dosage…
The second thing to do is to try to relax, by taking a shower or relaxing. Meaning, give your body time to process out whatever you took…
Good Luck and I Hope this Helps…. And relax… Your body is amazingly smart, and will take care of you if you will let it do its job… Meaning, you are in very good hands..

Do you know what Mylicon is for?
Simethicone is an anti-foaming agent that reduces the surface tension of gas bubbles, causing them to combine into larger bubbles in the stomach that can be passed more easily by burping. Simethicone does NOT REDUCE the quantity of GAS IN THE DIGESTIVE TRACK, it only increases the rate at which it exits the body, and is ineffective in the intestineWorst side effects are bloating, constipation, diarrhea, gas and heartburn. Simethicone solutions of differing concentration also have industrial applications for reducing foaming in certain chemical processes.
So many people say they use it 2 relieve their gassy baby, but that’s not what its really for. Actually it doesn’t even effect the intestines, it groups bubbles in the tummy so u can burp them up. Lots of parents actually make their baby feel more pain because the large bubbles go through the intentines after that so the air pockets hurt them.
Did you know that???
I just said how it works. The bubbles are joined together when you use Mylicon, the you’re supposed to burp them up. It doesn’t eliminate gas, it groups it together. It doesn’t get rid of gas in their intestines but if you use mylicon and then not burp your baby they will get big pockets of gas in their intestines because the bubbles will have grouped together and traveled down the digestive system.
you only hurt them or cause more gas if you give them the drops and don’t burp up the air. lots of babies get gas twinges or pains other than stomach gas. so mylicon isn’t BAD it just is if used improperly by ppl who think it’s like tums

admin answers:
Babies usually feel the pressure of bloating in their bellies not their intestines. Gas in babies is mostly caused by swallowing air while drinking from their bottles. It’s not like grown-up gas which is caused by a reaction of food. Therefore, the Mylicon helps them burp up the gas in their bellies.
Of course, most mothers didn’t need me to clarify that. Their baby does that for them because they stop crying after they have been given the medicine!
